Excursion 09

Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August 2004

Dear colleagues,

This is the first more-than-one-day trip in this session. The 2700 m altitude makes this outing harder due to the lower concentration of oxigen and to the likely long paths covered by snow. That's why this trip may require the use of PIOLET. This trip requires also a minimum logistics since we are going to stay for one night in the mountain. Reservations for a place in the mountain hut of Bostan-Tornay can be made by phoning 04 50 90 10 94 or 04 50 45 09 74. You could also visit the web page of the hut http://bostan.free.fr . Here is my proposal for this weekend:

Date: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August 2004
Site: Dents Blanches Occidentales (2709 m)
Classification: Easy (1st day), Difficult and lengthy (2nd day)
Altitude: 1) Bostan hut (1763 m), 2) Dent Blanche (2709 m)
Climbing up distance: 670 m (1st day), 950 + 115 + 50 m (2nd day)
Climbing time: 2h30 (1st day), 4h (2nd day)
Total hiking time: 9h (2nd day)
Starting point: Last parking place after Les Allamands (1098 m)
Meeting point: CERN Main cafeteria at 12 am on Saturday 7 August.
Remarks: Beautiful views, high mountain training.
Access: Motorway of Mont Blanch. Get out in Cluses. Take road D902 to Taninges. In Taninges take D907 to Samoens. Cross over Samoens in direction to "col de Joux Plane". Once in the highest part of Samoens in the site of "Les Moulins" do not follow D354 to "Joux Plane" but take small road to the right in a pronounced turn to the left hand side that will drive us to Les Allamands. You have to pass just after Samoens by the site of "Le Chevreret" and then by Les Fontaines. 3 km after les Fontaines we should arrive in the site of "Les Allamands". Continue along the same narrow road to the last parking place, some 500 m after "Les Allamands", and park there. The trip from CERN to Les Allamands may take 1h30.

In the URL http://excursiones.salicio.com you can find information on the outings.

It is convenient to emphasize some useful items: please do not forget to carry on (wear) raincoat, hat/cap and sun glasses, warm gloves, hiking boots or sport-footwear with thick and non-slipping sole, enough food and drinks for the own consumption. Spear dry clothes and after excursion confortable shoes are very convenient.

Have a lovely weekend! Cheers! Jose.
